Walking to School is Still a Hot Topic

According to an article from Leesburg Today, Loudoun County Public Schools officials this week stood by its decision to follow the existing, yet overlooked, policy that means about 3,700 students across the county will no longer receive bus service, including some in elementary school.

"The schools’ Transportation Department has received 156 appeals to its June decision to finally enforce a busing policy that has been on the books for years. It will require high school and middle school students who live within one mile of their school, and elementary students who live within 0.8 miles of their school, to either walk or find a ride."

"Administrators from the Transportation Department gave an update on the policy and the appeals process at the School Board’s Health, Wellness and Transportation Committee meeting Monday evening. The administrators made it clear they are not budging on the policy as a whole, but Assistant Superintendent of Support Services Kevin Lewis said his department is considering each appeal on a case-by-case basis."

The move means that high school and middle school students who live within one mile of their school must walk or find a ride to school, and elementary students living within eight-tenths of a mile of their school must walk or find a ride.
