Drivers on busy Route 28 are getting much needed congestion relief with the completion of a project to widen several sections of the major route near Dulles Airport, that according to the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT).
With construction work now officially complete, drivers have four lanes on southbound Route 28 from Waxpool Road to Route 50, as well as northbound Route 28 from McLearen Road to the Dulles Toll Road (lanes first opened in late June). The portion of the fourth southbound lane from Waxpool Road to Innovation Avenue opened to traffic in January.
The spot widening began in September 2015. It was funded by the Northern Virginia Transportation Authority and the Route 28 Tax District, and was administered by VDOT.
Traffic counts on southbound Route 28 between Waxpool Road and Route 50 range from 108,000 to 140,000 vehicles a day. Traffic on northbound Route 28 between McLearen Road and the Dulles Toll Road ranges from 108,000 to 127,000 vehicles a day.
